This is Gabrielle and Rebekah with our High Prairie Elementary School news this week, for the South Peace News report.

Grade 6L learning all about Space Science including each planet in our Solar System.

In Grade 3T, students are working on learning our times tables in Math. In Language they are focusing on the five W’s of detail: who, what, when, where and why/how. In Social Studies, they are starting to learn about maps and Canada.

In Science, Grade 4S is working with Little Bits Kits and Simple Machines to build devices that move and have moving parts. In Math, students are developing their understanding of algebra operations with missing elements and problem solving.

To recognize National Puzzle Day on Jan. 29, HPE students will be given the opportunity to be challenged in a school-wide Scrabble game! Check out the library for word challenge results! Studies have found that when we work on a jigsaw puzzle, we use both sides of the brain, and spending time daily working on puzzles improves memory.

Grade 2R has been discussing New Year’s Resolutions. They are going to try to keep their promise to themselves. In Science, students have started reading hot and cold temperatures. Last week was a great week for that!

The students are teaching a lesson in Grade 5C. Each student has picked something they are interested in. So far we have had lessons on hockey, tree drawing, flower drawing, slime making, flip book creating and snow globe building. The students are learning why it’s important to be organized and prepared. The students are also learning why it’s important to stay on task. They are all learning many creative drawing skills, sports skills and building skills. The student teaching continues until the end of January.

Last week, Professor Wow was going to visit our school, but because of the cold weather, it was changed to Jan. 29. Professor Wow uses his circus skills to reveal the magical world of Science all around us. He demonstrates Newton’s three laws of motion, the kinetic theory of matter and more. It will be a fantastic performance, Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Handgames has started at HPE. Grades 4-6 students are invited to come and learn this fun game. We will meet every Wednesday at 12:50 p.m. in the Student Support room.

Please have your child dress appropriately for our winter weather! HPE will be having recess outside each day unless the temperature exceeds -25C, in which case the recess will be inside. Skin freezes fast so speak with your child about wearing their gloves, winter coat [not a hoodie] and a toque. Stay safe and warm!

Our next HPE Parent Council lunch is Monday, Jan. 27. Please make sure your child’s order is in by Thursday, Jan. 23, so that they don’t miss out on the pizza from Boondocks!

Check in with us next week to see what’s happening at HPE!
