E.W. Pratt High School in High Prairie has changed its graduation date and venue to July 9 to accommodate a larger class.
Ceremonies have been moved to the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre at 2 p.m. rather than the school gymnasium.
“It was a parent and student decision,” says principal Jamie Babcock, who notes that about 70 students will graduate.
Last year, the class had only 46 students.
“It more accurately reflects the students who will actually graduate,” Babcock says.
For the past several years, graduation has been held in early May in the school gymnasium, which was usually filled to capacity. A larger auditorium will allow each graduate to invite about nine family members.
Babcock says the ceremonies in July will avoid the distraction of the festivities while students can still be focused on exams and other work.
