Another major recreation hockey tournament will be played in High Prairie.

The High Prairie Red Wings Recreation Hockey Tournament is scheduled for March 20-22 at the Sports Palace and Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre.

The new tournament will be a fundraiser for the Red Wings, one of three northern Alberta teams playing in the first year in the West Division in the Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League.

“We want to get this tournament going and start a new tradition in High Prairie,” says Derek Prue, West Division expansion director who is organizing the event.

“It will be a good way to raise funds and promote the new team.”

Teams are invited to compete in Men’s, Legends and Women’s Divisions.

Top prize money of $10,000 will be awarded to the Men’s champion and lower for other divisions, depending on the number of teams, Prue says.

The event is the weekend before the 18th annual Treaty 8 First Nations Cup tournament set for March 26-29.

“A few people suggested the tournament,” Prue says.

“Some of the local Red Wings have played in the Treaty 8 tournament and said we could have a tournament, too.”

He predicts many teams from Treaty 8 will compete in the Red Wings’ tournament.

“That will give any teams in the Treaty 8 tournament or going to Native Provincials a good warm-up,” Prue says.

“We expect teams from all over Alberta.”

He says the tournament may attract as many teams that compete in the Treaty 8 event.
