Big Lakes County is supporting the 60th annual High Prairie Elks Pro Rodeo.

At its regular meeting Jan. 22, council approved a sponsorship grant of $1,000 for the event set for July 28-29.

Since 2016, the county has given a $1,000 sponsorship grant, says Heather Nanninga, director of corporate services.

For a sponsorship grant from $200 to $2,000, donors are specifically promoted and recognized at the event.

“By promoting both the Elks Pro Rodeo and the Big Lakes region, we are attempting to make this a holiday destination,” rodeo chair Charlie Milner writes in a letter to council.

“We believe that our annual pro rodeo is a benefit to the entire region, providing affordable family entertainment and a source of revenue for local businesses.”

The rodeo attracts more than 2,500 people daily, he notes.

“The High Prairie Elks Pro Rodeo has a reputation of being one of the top rodeos in Alberta and draws people from communities throughout northern Alberta,” Milner says.

County council also supported a sponsorship of $600 for the 19th annual High Prairie Gun and Sportsman Show set for April 18-19 at the Gordon Buchanan Recreation Centre.
