Chalifoux’s OT winner tames Icedogs

Mikal Chalifoux scored in overtime as the High Prairie Red Wings edged the league rival Slave Lake Icedogs 5-4 at home in junior hockey.

The local product popped the winner in Greater Metro Hockey League action in the West Division. Fabian McDonald assisted.

High Prairie jumped out to an early 2-0 lead almost four minutes in the game. Benny Yellowknee scored at 1:17 assisted by Thayne Schur-Auger.

Donovan Joseyounen netted the puck at 3:46 assisted by Larry Yellowknee and Chalifoux.

The Red Wings led 4-2 after the second period.

Sage Letendre scored in the second period at 4:36 assisted by Tyson Mitchell.

Joseyounen tallied a power-play goal at 17:14 assisted by Chalifoux and Mitchell.

Slave Lake popped a pair in the third period to send the game into overtime.

Jeremiah Clarke was busy in the Red Wing crease as High Prairie outshot Slave Lake 47-43.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak.

High Prairie fell 5-3 against the Northern Alberta Tomahawks in Enoch on Dec. 14.

After a scoreless first period, the Red Wings trailed 2-1 after two periods.

Mikal Chalifoux scored a power-play goal at 14:11 assisted by Benny Yellowknee.

The Red Wings added two goals in the final period.

Chalifoux scored at 12:22 assisted by John Yellowknee and Benny Yellowknee.

Larry Yellowknee popped a power-play goal at 16:59 assisted by Tyson Mitchell and Benny Yellowknee.

Red Wing goalie Bradley Roncin was busy as the Slave Lake outshot High Prairie 66-35.

After a Christmas break, the Red Wings return to aciton in the New Year.

The Red Wings are in Slave Lake Jan. 3 and at home vs Slave Lake Jan. 5. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
