Despite another solid effort, the Atikameg Warriors lost another close game in Smoky River Junior High School Basketball League action Jan. 30.

The Warriors lost to Western Conference leading G.P. Vanier 53-42 at Donnelly. The Vipers are now 5-2 while the Warriors fell to 1-5.

A big 16-point third quarter pulled the Warriors to within three points at 39-36 but the Vipers rallied in the final quarter to pull away with 14 points of their own.

The Vipers led 10-6 after one quarter and 27-20 at the half.

As they have done all season, David Rebamonte and John Perez led the Vipers with 15 and 12 points respectively. They lead the Vipers in scoring, both averaging over 13 points per game. Derek Labrecque added eight points while Riley Gervais, Raiden Burt and William Hauch each added four.

Despite their efforts, the Vipers’ big guns were not the leading scorers in the game. That honour went to the Warriors’ Keshan McLeod, who netted 16 in the loss, including seven points in the second and third quarters.

Cody Auger added nine points, Preston Grey and John Thunder six points each, and Destin Laboucan five.

The Warriors end the regular season portion of their schedule with two home games against the High Prairie schools. They host the Prairie River Raiders on Feb. 7 and the St. Andrew’s Saints Feb. 14.
