Plans to expand the Joussard fire hall and municipal services building will be revamped after tenders came in at more than twice the budgeted figure of $484,070.

At its regular meeting Aug. 22, Big Lakes County council received the tenders for information as recommended by Vic Abel, director of public works.

“Tenders came in double over the budget,” Abel says.

The county received tenders of $1,345,000 and $988,488, while one bid of $1,094,700 was not completed.

“Maybe we should abandon the project,” Abel says.

Tenders were called to expand the building to include another bay for the public works department, and storage and office space, he says.

“It’s very expensive to add on,” Enilda – Big Meadows Councillor Donald Bissell says. Instead, the county will consider other ways to accommodate the growing needs.

“We need to look at other options and it could be portable buildings,” CAO Roy Brideau says.

“Space is an issue in that facility.”

The county will seek other alternatives for portable buildings, including used structures, Brideau says.
