High Prairie Branch,
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
While living in Edmonton as a young father of two small and active children, my wife and I were shopping at Walmart one evening.
While my wife was browsing shoes, I was watching my daughter run past the gaps at the other end of the aisles to her delight. It wasn’t long before I realized I couldn’t hear her and hadn’t seen her for a few moments.
As I called for her and searched among the footwear to no success my concern grew, as we looked through adjoining departments without result. Panic began to set in and we enlisted help from employees.
Fear and despair are powerful tools for the imagination and worse case scenarios began to flood my mind as I heard the missing child announcement over the intercom.
“How excellent is thy loving kindness, 0 God! Therefore, the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.” [Psalms 36:7]
It is in these moments of fear and despair when we must trust in the Lord and He will hear the cries of our heart. As I prayed for my wife, for the ability to stay calm and to find my daughter, I felt the gentle assurance of the Holy Ghost that all would be OK.
As I finished my pleading, I spotted an employee escorting my runaway from the other side of the store. Faith can help to overcome our fear and hope helps to overcome my despair.
This life can be very discouraging and full of despair. Without an understanding of the atonement of Jesus Christ, life can seem pointless. With the knowledge of the resurrection and the sacrifice which Christ performed in our behalf, we can hope for a better life in the world to come. Our perspective changes and through hope life becomes bearable.
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.” [Romans 15:13]
