The High Prairie and Area Chamber of Commerce has set Oct. 20 as the date for the annual Small Business Gala to celebrate Small Business Week, Oct. 14-20.

New chamber president Barry Sharkawi made the announcement at the regular meeting Sept. 20.

“We will celebrate small business in High Prairie and the surrounding region,” Shar- kawi says.

A keynote speaker and ticket information will be confirmed in early October. The gala will be held at Peavine Inn and Suites.

Nominations for the annual awards will also be out in several locations in the community.

In other business, an open house in the foyer in the Town of High Prairie civic building is also being considered to invite people to share their ideas and concerns.

Brogan Severson was welcomed as the new administrative assistant, starting Sept. 4. She works every Thursday at the office from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Employed at Marigold Enterprises, Severson has extensive experience in administration and fundraising acti- vities.

Sharkawi says the chamber and High Prairie are open for business.

“We want to be open to members and the community,” Sharkawi says.

All regular business will be discussed during the meetings, now held the third Thursday at Amiro’s Steak House at noon.

“Our meetings are open and we want to let business people [be] involved in our decisions,” Sharkawi says.

Previously, an executive meeting was held at 10 a.m. followed by the regular meeting at 11 a.m.

The new president has a passion to promote and enhance business downtown.

“We want to talk to downtown businesses about revitalization and getting more support for their businesses,” Shar- kawi says.

“We have to help businesses downtown.”

As Christmas approaches, the chamber plans to get more involved with the Christmas Light-Up with the High Prairie Community Beautification Association. Beautification chair Chris Clegg attended to discuss plans at the Nov. 30 Light-Up.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for Oct. 17 at noon.
