Funding denied for missing deadline

A funding application to Big Lakes County has been turned down since it arrived after the prescribed deadline.

At its regular meeting Jan. 10, council denied a request from the Big Meadow Community Hall Association for funding of $8,120 to repair the roof of the building, as recommendation by administration.

The association completed a funding application, however, it was submitted by the county on Dec. 12 after the application deadline of Oct. 31, says Heather Nanninga, director of corporate services.

The county’s current policy on capital grants states that applications for funding for the upcoming year for budget deliberations must be received by Oct. 31.

“Capital grant funding requests received after that time will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and may be funded by the discretion of council if sufficient funding remains in the appropriate budget account.”

Council complied with policy to make its decision.

“We have to do what we have to do,” High Prairie East – Banana Belt Councillor Don Charrois says.

Funding is 50 per cent of the cost of $16,240 for polyurea lining.

Most recently, the association was granted $15,000 by the county in 2014 for kitchen renovations.

Nanninga says the county declined an application for funding in 2017 for a playground replacement and gravel.
