Editorial – Where’s the appreciation?

Jeff Burgar

This is Year Four of the annual Small Business Awards in High Prairie.

At least, it said on last year’s posters that 2017 was the 3rd annual event for the High Prairie & Area Chamber of Commerce. So this must make it the 4th annual, right?

It seems sort of strange that in the 40 or 50 years of the High Prairie Chamber of Commerce being in existence, this is only the fourth time, coming up this month, that awards will be made.

Maybe there are other years that are just sort of lost in history. There were also a few years when the chamber didn’t really operate. Which is how it became called “High Prairie and Area Chamber” instead of “High Prairie and District Chamber.”

In any event, this newspaper would like to know if you, your group, business or club ever got any sort of business award from the chamber over those decades.

Meantime, the present chamber has a problem. But you know something about awards? The past couple of years it was really hard to get businesses nominated so they could get an award.

Seriously! There is just no way that the people who show up for chamber meetings know about every single business operating right across the region the chamber services, from Red Earth to Kinuso to Sunset House. No way at all. So, the Chamber asks for nominations.

Guess what? Very few were given. We can’t imagine our community thinks so little of local stores and crafts and manufacturing and services from carpenters and plumbers and snow removal folks and eateries and sleeping places that none of them deserve an award. Come on!

So, please consider this just one of the many calls for names to be brought forward. To jog your thinking cap, these are the businesses and people who got awards last year:

* Business-of-the-Year [under 10 employees] – Jerry’s Store; Business-of-the-Year [over 10 employees] – The Boondocks Grill; New Business-of-the-Year – Fresh Inspirations; Environmental Awareness Award – High Prairie Forest Products; Entrepreneur-of-the-Year [tie] – Amp’d Up Electric and Dead-On Construction; Tourism and Hospitality Award – Town of High Prairie RV Park; Community Spirit Individual Award – Rhonda Keay; Community Spirit Business Award – Real Country FM; Façade Improvement Award [tie] – A Thousand Words; Photography and High Prairie and District Golf Club.

All very deserving! These are the type of businesses the chamber wants to recognize. You must have ideas or thoughts. Here are the places you can nominate a business or person of your choice:

* High Prairie Chamber of Commerce website at hpchamber.net/nominations; Ballot boxes around High Prairie; Email to office@hpchamber.net; Send a text to [780] 523-9203 or [780] 523-5368; fill out the form at southpeacenews.com/nominations

The deadline for nominations is this week, Friday, Oct. 12. Please, let’s show our appreciation. Awards will be presented at the Small Business Gala Oct. 20.
