Fire districts in Big Lakes County will open their doors Oct 1 to residents for a special barbecue to mark Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 7-13.
Big Lakes County Fire Services will host the free barbecue and open house at fire halls in Enilda, Faust, Grouard, Joussard and Kinuso from 6-8 p.m.
“It’s an opportunity for residents to learn more about the services offered in the county, meet firefighters and learn about some of the tools, equipment, protective gear and fire trucks used in both training and response operations in times of emergency,” fire chief John McDermott says.
A children’s colouring contest will also be held and doors prizes will be given away.
Two fire districts welcomed new fire trucks in June.
A 2016 Freightliner fire engine arrived June 19 and was commissioned into service June 20. The tank on the truck carries 800 gallons of water and has a pumping capacity of 1,250 gallons per minute, as well as foam capability.
As well, the truck has the ability to draw water from non-traditional sources such as a lake, river or dugout.
A 2018 Ford F550 four-wheel drive fire rescue truck arrived in Joussard. The truck is designed to serve a dual-purpose apparatus and as a light rescue for motor vehicle collisions with towing capacity.
High Prairie Volunteer Fire Department is also considering a community event but nothing has been confirmed to date.
