During their history in the Smoky River Junior High School Basketball League, the Donnelly G.P. Vanier Vipers boy’s team has rarely been a threat to win the league title.
In fact, their only title came in 2005 since the league’s inception in 1998.
But that may change this year after a narrow home court 63-61 loss to the always powerful Prairie River Raiders from High Prairie Nov. 30.
PRJH prevailed in the seesaw battle which saw them trailing 36-31 at the half – the teams were tied 17-17 after one quarter.
However, PRJH rallied to lead 50-49 after three quarters and held on for the win.
Adam Cardinal led PRJH with 31 points including the decisive basket late in the game. Kieran Larson added 17 to help pace the attack. Logan Krupa scored seven points, Mondi Lazuna four, and Dave Espina and Nick Johansson two points each.
Eight different Vipers scored in their season opener. Dorian Adams led the way with 21 points while John Perez added 12. Cole Bremont and Thomas Lanpelier added six points each and David Rebamonte five. Alden Garcia and Riley Gervais each scored four points and Charles Castro three to complete the scoring.
Next action for PRJH is Dec. 7 when they travel to Slave Lake to play the St. Francis Falcons. The Vipers visit Gift Lake.
